Early 20th Century Russian Bessarabian Floral Handmade Wool Rug BB7548 10'0" × 11'6" $32,000

$32,000

The term ‘Bessarabian rugs’ relates to a group of 19th- century pile carpets and flat weaves/kilims made in the mountainous Carpathian region between the Ukraine and Moldova. Although little is known about the circumstances or workshops where these classical European carpets and flat-weaves were fashioned, the output shows a synthesis of local folk motifs and designs inspired by 18th- century French carpets popular at the Russian Court and in aristocratic circles. Bessarabian rugs are easily recognizable thanks to stylized floral patterns executed in a slightly folkloristic and whimsical manner, very often displaying shades of red, beige and green against a dark or simply black background. This vintage Russian rug is a fine example from our collection of early 20th century Russian Bessarabian carpets.

Its black field carries an enlarged leaf and mixed blossom trellis overall, within a black floral spray and scrolling leafy vinery border. This enchanting design is complemented by impeccable workmanship. The antique Bessarabian rug’s body was carefully hand-knotted out of the finest wool which ensured its longevity. If maintained properly, this Russian rug will withstand years of usage without any signs of wear.
