Vintage Russian Bessarabian Carpet

Vintage Russian Bessarabian Carpet Description:

A fine example from our collection of early 20th century Russian Bessarabian carpets, the black field with an enlarged leaf and mixed blossom trellis overall, within a black floral spray and scrolling leafy vinery border.

For countless centuries Bessarabian rugs and carpet shave been stitched in many European countries including France, England, Italy and Russia. These Antique Oriental rugs and carpets were often embroidered in panels, by groups of females that included nuns and noblewomen the completed panels were then joined to form elaborate carpet designs. Although floral decoration is most often utilized, european carpets are sometimes figural in design, with pastoral scenes and complex landscapes.
