Vintage Bessarabian Rug BB2485
A Bessarabian rug, the taupe field with stars and an enlarged diamond framing a central roundel containing a centerpiece and geometric leaves within a beige border with connected cartouches containing geometric motifs.
The Bessarabian nomenclature relates to a group of nineteenth century European Rugs and flat weaves or antique kilim rugs made in the mountainous Carpathian region between the Ukraine and Moldova. Although little is known about the circumstances or workshops where these rugs for sale and flat weaves were fashioned, the output shows a synthesis of local folk motifs and designs inspired by eighteenth century French carpets popular at the Russian Court and in aristocratic circles.
