Fine Antique Indian Agra Red and Blue Handmade Rug BB0912 13'4" × 17'2" $55,000

$55,000

An early 20th century Agra cotton antique rug from North India, the powder blue field with medallions, serrated leaves, lozenges and floral sprays, within a narrow red palmette and flowering vine border.

Since the golden age of Mughal India the production of agra oriental rugs and carpets had virtually disappeared until it was regenerated under British rule. Prisoners in the country’s jails – including those of Lahore, Yeraoda and Montgomery, as well as Agra – wove some of the most beautiful carpets. Designs for these antique Agra rugs were often based upon classical Persian pieces from the sixteenth and seventeenth century especially indian rugs and carpets in the collection of the Maharajah of Jaipur.
