Antique Persian Sultanabad Rug. Origin: Persia. Circa: 1880. As with many other Persian rugs, this magnificent late 19th century antique Persian Sultanabad rug features all-over designs of palmettes and vinescrolls with creative addition of animal motifs. What distinguishes it from other Persian rugs is the fact that pattern is bolder, larger and of a more supple weave. Immediately perceived in the main field are oval plates in cobalt blue shade, serving 2 pieces of fish, one fish colored in taupe and the other in vivid red. They are incorporated in the symmetrically mirrored floral and animal rich herati pattern placed on the sand colored field. Several borders gracefully frame the primary field’s all-over repeating motifs which seem to have no beginning and no end. This design idea is believed to symbolize eternity. A deep cobalt blue primary border features blossoms and birds scattered over entwining branches additionally surrounded by smaller frames of more geometric flowers in a warm palette of colors – vivid reds, beiges, shades of taupe, greens and purples.
