Antique Samarkand Runner BB5494 3'6" × 12'7" $20,000

$20,000

The city of Samarkand is well known for being the Islamic center for scholarly study where traditions of ancient crafts important for Islam, such as embroidery, gold embroidery, silk weaving, engraving on copper, ceramics, carving and painting on wood are carefully preserved. Samarkand rugs have been produced in this region since at least the seventeenth century. For thousands of years these lands of arid steppes, deserts and brutal mountain ranges were traversed by caravans of merchants and traders from China to Western Europe along the Silk Road.

This stunning antique Samarkand rug was hand woven in the late 19th century, circa 1880. The perfect balance between colors and design makes it the best example of what antique Oriental rugs can achieve. Just take a look at its wonderful pattern. Central field contains several rectangles, each filled with separate design of florals and climbing vines. Minimalist borders separating them utilize a discreet yet beautiful floral motif, which certainly enhances the whole composition. Color palette of this antique Samarkand rug not only helps to give the pattern more depth, but also shows how skilled weavers were in the past. Elegant mix of blue and delicate red is further improved with an addition of neutral beige, which brings out the best in both those hues.

The size of this Samarkand rug,  3’6″ × 12’7″ (107 × 384 cm), makes it a great choice for corridors and halls, especially those in dire need of some Oriental rug beauty,
