1800s French Savonnerie Hand Knotted Wool Rug BB8517 8'6" × 10'0" $30,000
$30,000
A French Savonnerie rug, the cinnamon field has an overall tile design formed by thick borders with blossoms at the intersections. Each compartment contains a lush garland-framed bouquet.
The Savonnerie factory, located on the present Musee d’Art Moderne site, inherited its name from the soap-making factory it took over at the behest of Louis XIII. From 1660 until 1743, Savonnerie was a manufacturer royale, carrying out commissions for French Savonnerie rugs and carpets specifically designed for the Royal Palaces. In the 1770s, the tapestry looms at Aubusson in the Creuze Valley near Limoges were converted to produce flat-woven rugs and carpets under royal warrant. No one knows precisely when European rug weaving began in this area, but certainly, tapestries were first woven there long before the Gothic era.
