Antique Spanish Flat-Weave Runner Rug BB5415 2'10" × 9'10" $16,000
$16,000
This circa-1850 antique Spanish runner rug features stylized floral abstractions in beige against a field of dark blue. A thick main border of sky blue contains more abstractions and arabesques and completes the look, which is reminiscent of simple tribal motifs. Flat-woven antique carpets feature a type of weave created from vertical (weft) and horizontal (warp) interlocked threads, for a napless overall effect. Spanish cut-pile rugs from the 15th – 17th centuries were woven with knots tied to single warps. After the Christian conquest of Spain, two main types of spanish style area rugs were produced – those that combined folk motifs with Christian and Islamic designs and those that were based upon Turkish motifs. In the 18th and 19th centuries, vintage carpets, woven with the Turkish knot, were produced with designs based on those from Savonnerie and Aubusson factories in France.
