Antique Indian Amritsar Pale Brown and Beige Handwoven Wool Rug BB5779 9'0" × 14'9" $44,500
$44,500
This turn of the century antique Indian Amritsar rug features a large center medallion in shades of cool brown and an all-over design of floral motifs against a field of beige. Elaborate, ornate corner brackets complete the look of this antique carpet with a muted patina common to antique oriental rugs. The carpet comes from Amritsar (meaning “the lake of immortality” in Sanskrit), a city in Punjab in the northwest of India, near the Kashmir region.
The weavers of this city’s tradition created unique textiles in part because they had not developed a distinctive style of rug-weaving as early as other Indian counterparts. While regions of southern and western India began weaving indian oriental rugs during the Mughal era, the weavers of Amritsar took their direction from the sensibilities of the West.
