Antique Sultanabad Persian Floral Allover Ivory Hand-Knotted Wool Rug – Circa 1900 BB7566 11'2" × 21'0" $95,000
$95,000
Rich in heritage and grandeur, this exceptional antique Persian Sultanabad rug from the early 20th century is a testament to the masterful weaving tradition of central Iran. Originating in the historic city of Sultanabad—known today as Arak—this rug exhibits a classic design vocabulary refined for aristocratic tastes and Western export markets of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The rug features a vibrant brick red field, masterfully filled with a sprawling allover pattern of interlaced floral motifs, angular palmettes, and arabesque vines, executed in a harmonious palette of ivory, deep indigo, forest green, ochre, camel, and coral. At its heart, symmetrical medallion-like floral forms anchor the composition, lending it an elegant balance without adhering to a strict central medallion format—an aesthetic choice often favored in Sultanabad weavings.
A wide cream-colored border frames the field, adorned with ornate rosettes, blossoming palmettes, and curving vines, set against a soft neutral ground that contrasts beautifully with the intensity of the interior. A succession of multiple minor guard borders, each decorated with petite floral meanders and classic Persian motifs, completes the composition with rhythm and finesse.
Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, this rug showcases a coarse yet durable weave typical of antique Sultanabads, making it not only visually arresting but also highly functional for large spaces. The wool pile appears to retain its original luster, with areas of natural abrash (color variation due to hand-dyeing) adding movement and character to the design.
Despite its age, the rug is in very good condition, with its intricate motifs well-preserved and a beautifully aged patina gracing the entire surface. Slight variations in color and wear patterns evoke a sense of authenticity and antique charm, enhancing its decorative appeal.
