A Charles Francis Annesley Voysey rug BB4677

Circa: 1920

Known as the Tulip design, this rug counts among the most complex rugs designed by C.F.A. Voysey (1857-1941).  While its curvilinear vines and leaves are carefully laid out overall, framing the floral motifs, the balance of the contrasting colors contribute to the harmony of the composition.  Born in England, C.F.A. Voysey was a leader of the Arts and Crafts movement, who had a great influence on his contemporaries.  Early in his career as a designer and architect, Voysey primarily designed textiles and wallpaper.  Among the retailers and manufacturers of his rug designs were Morton's (Donegal rugs), Tomkinson and Adam, Yates & Co., and Heal's department store.
