This antique Moroccan kilim rug is a fine study in abstract geometrics, intricate knot designs and traditional oriental patterns occuring in colors of green, brown and beige. A kilim rug is a flat-woven - or pileless - carpet, often reversible, in which a design pattern is formed by colored weft strings being wrapped around the warp. Unique antique kilims and other weavings have been produced by nomads and villagers throughout the Middle East and Central Asia for centuries. Decorative woven saddlebags, storage sacks, tent hangings, animal trappings and floor covers have traditionally enhanced important aspects of daily life, and are genuine expressions of tribal culture. The geometric motifs in these antique tribal rugs and weavings evolved directly on the loom, with each weaver creating subtle variations that reflected their own artistic personality.
